The Dream of the 90s is Alive in the UCP

Jason: Do you remember the 90’s? Y’know. People were talking about flat-taxes and buying paisley neckties. And people were singing about budget deficits and debt and reforming the Senate?

Maggie: Yeah?

Jason: There’s a place where that idea still exists as a reality and I’m leading it

Maggie: What is it?

Jason: The United Conservative Party.

Jason: Remember when kids at private schools dreamed of growing up to be Preston Manning? Everyone listened to compact discs and wore Doc Martens? When we’d stay up until 11pm eating take-out pizza and admiring Ronald Reagan?

Maggie: Right. I thought that died out a long time ago.

Jason: Not in the UCP.

Maggie: So from what I can surmise from what you’re positing, it’s like the UCP is almost an alternative universe. It’s like Ralph Klein never stopped blowing up hospitals and closing schools. The Notley government never happened.

Jason: Exactly!

Maggie: In the UCP it’s almost like government doesn’t exist, right? People drive big trucks. They drive double decker trucks! There is no carbon tax!*

Jason: Welcome to the UCP!

*Except there totally is a carbon tax.

An obvious conservative partisan, Don T has just put communism on Dave like Klein put communism on Kevin Taft… I’ve no talent at being a witty writer so I just say it plainly… conservative partisans like Don T clearly have no effin idea what historical irony his comment puts him into with regard to conservative partisans echoing that asshole Ralph Klein in smearing critics with ‘communism!!!’, nor how ignorant and uniformed conservative partisans can be. There is really, really, something that’s meta- about this comment in response to THIS post that features Klein.

Sad ppl still think the UCP is a good choice as it provides only old approaches which never worked well in the past.

If the era of blowing up hospitals was so great, why did none of Klein’s successors continue to enthusiastically embrace it? If privatizing health care was really what Albertans wanted, how come Ralph couldn’t make it happen? I remember large protests when he hinted about doing that which forced him to reconsider. Can Kenney really “kill” the carbon tax if the provincial one will just replaced by a federal one in the same amount?

In politics sometimes talk is cheap, you can deny climate change, you can deny reality, you can have no policies, but voters may also start to realize the Kenney is all hat and no cattle, as they say. Sometimes voters do elect con men and then regret it, but more often than not they realize when they are being conned.

“Communism” you say, I wasn’t aware we ever had communism in Alberta. Not a governing party anyway. You people sound like the alarmist President Reagan or Nixon or the chilling McCarthy era. What are you afraid of? It sounds like fear-mongering to me.

Check the Chief Electoral Officer’s website. There is a registered communist party in Alberta, and a former candidate for them is working for Notley. Communism is unfortunately alive and well in Alberta.
