Alberta Liberals chose their new leader today in Edmonton. Former Tory MLA Raj Sherman was selected on their first ballot over veteran MLAs Hugh MacDonald and Laurie Blakeman, and Calgarians Bill Harvey and Bruce Payne. Here are some photos of today’s event:

Wow Dave! Your little web based poll was awfully close to the actual results. Even the %’s were similar. Shift 10% from Raj to Hugh and you had almost the exact right #’s. That’s fun…

Raj. If he don,t get his way with the Liberals like with PC Party then will he showup as leader for WR NDP or AP maybe even the green party.

The whisper campaign is/will be, in full bore. Have heard the gossip that the medical fraternity at the U of A is buzzing with opinions of medical competence of Sherman. Wonder when it will bust out into the open.

The medical fraternity is something of an adjunct to the Conservative Party, it would seem, given the disgraceful behaviour last fall of the AMA president, Dr. White, when he agreed to investigate Dr. Sherman’s mental state on the urging of MLA Fred Horne. In Alberta, spirited opposition to the policies of the governing party is seen by certain elites as equivalent to being unhinged. The AMA should have removed White from his presidency after his actions were revealed, but instead accepted his apology and he remains the president.

An attempt to “bust out into the open” with personal attacks on the leaders of the opposition parties rather than discussion of their policies would likely backfire as did the sleazy effort last fall to deal with serious issues raised by Sherman by focusing on his supposed mental state rather than the facts he presented.

Nor is a sleazy whispering campaign against Sherman or any other Opposition MLA likely to be welcomed by most voters.

Horrible mistake for the Alberta Liberal party, and I am a Wildrose supporter.

Sherman is a wild cannon. He will have a very, very short time frame to get long term Liberals onside. If he doesn’t he will be gone after the next election, as I honestly thing it will be a fight for the bottom between the ND’s, Alberta Party and the Liberals.

The Wildrose will not win (to my regret), but will form the official opposition.

My guess (assuming 87 seats) Tory – 46 Wildrose – 32 Liberals-6 ND’s – 2 Alberta Party – 1

Dr. Swan was right in his farewell speach.

I have NO idea who is on the horizon for the Liberal party in Alberta that could match a Decore, because that is what it will take to be competitive.

The biggest limiting factor for the Liberals is money. The establishment has huge cash reserves and they will likely call an opportunistically timed election to not even give the Liberals a chance to grow. It was just yesterday, they became a new caucus. You can’ t build every association over night. As people wakeup and start to realize that ALP core values are resonating with them, they will finally wake up from the horrible eyes wide shut nightmare and decades of mental darkness and foggyness, after Lougheed.
