After spending the past four days driving through the Cariboo, I can say with certainty that the highways in British Columbia’s interior were much smoother than any highway between the BC-Alberta boundary and Edmonton.

Try driving in Saskatchewan.
The grass is always greener on the other side.
The grass sure felt a lot smoother to drive on the other side.
And I’m sure all of the above have smoother roads than Quebec!
I don’t know about smoother, but they sure do tend to be narrower. Try driving BC Hwy 2 from the Alberta border (at Demmitt) to Dawson Creek, or Hwy 97 from Dawson to Chetwynd, or Hwy 5 from Tete Jaune Cache (west of Jasper) south to Kamloops. All have much narrower shoulders than most Alberta primary highways. Crossing the border at Demmitt, from AB Hwy 43 to BC 2 shows this very clearly.
