Episode 32: GSAs, GSAs, GSAs. Week 2 of Alberta’s Election.

Alberta’s provincial election is 16 days away and for the duration of the campaign, we are going to be recording a new episode of the Daveberta Podcast each week.

In this episode Dave and Ryan talk about the United Conservative Party reopening the Gay-Straight Alliance debate, the transphobic comments that led to the departure of Calgary-South East UCP candidate Eva Kiryakos, Rachel Notley’s plan to expand Alberta’s $25/day childcare program and the Liberal Party‘s proposal to introduce a Harmonized Sales Tax and reform the electoral system. We also look ahead to this week’s televised leaders’ debate and whether Freedom Conservative Party leader Derek Fildebrandt should be allowed to join in the fun.

We also spend some time focusing on a few races we are watching. This week we look at Lethbridge-East and Lethbridge-West.

Hi Dave

There is cognitive disconnect and dissonance happening in this election 2019 regarding the incredible media coverage about climate change while at the same time the Green Party of Alberta is being silenced in this election. The most important issues addressed by this party, resonating loudly around the world and in our daily media, are being purposefully shut out & silenced in our election coverage 2019 across ALL media

On this podcast even you who have been supportive of the Greens refuse to acknowledge their existence. You had time on this podcast to talk about parties like the Alberta Advantage Party with 28/87 candidates nominated, the Freedom Conservative Party with 24/87 candidates and with a leader who has been convicted of a Hit & Run, poaching on public lands and stealing taxpayer money from the LAO for AirBnB personal profits in his first term only. Yet you do not even acknowledge the Greens existence with 32/87 nominated candidates.

Please explain the absolute consistent, strategic suppression of the Green voice in this election?

I guess it must be the case of “the truth hurts!”

Hi Dave,

Towards the end of this Podcast the Greem Party was briefly mentioned and the number of their nominated candidates exceeding many others on the list. Thank you for mentioning that leaders might possibly be considered for the leadership debate even though the party has not yet held a seat. I am very excited because Greens this time could hold a balance of power in a collaborative minority government, next best thing to proportional government! I was so busy campaigning I had to listen in two parts.

So I appreciate you mentioned the Greens after all – we were actually the first and only party to propose an HST in the weeks leading up to the dropping of the writ – as a real and pragmatic solution to the negative unhealthy destructive boom/bust cycles for this province as our policy for stability and prosperity for everyone without compromising it by a decrease in income tax. Of course, as in NS, the PST should not be applied to essential goods and services to protect lower income people.

Sincerely

Wow, to make the claim that any parents are concerned with bill 24 are parents that are bad parents and whom will abuse their children is absolutions insulting. As a parent I do want to know what is going on with my kids, it doesn’t matter what club or group they join. I’m disappointed you would actually make this claim. Bill 24 teaches the kids it’s okay to lie or keep secrets from the parents, good parents or not. My wife was speaking to my daughter and asked her about it. She said that she was told that GSAs are secret from the parents and need to be that way to protect kids that are gay. It’s situations like this that concern me. Only a few years ago you were a bad parent if you didn’t pay attention to what your kids did, now you are a bad parent for caring.

I absolutely agree with you Sheldon. The erosion of parental rights under Bill 24 should be of great concern to all Albertans. We have to be prepared to take flak for standing up for our rights and not be put off when we are labeled as homophobic and hateful, even though we know it is unfair and untrue.
